Consultancy Founder Devotes Himself To Remaking Atlantic Media Online
Posted Monday, March 12, 2007 3:16:05 PM by Blog57 Team
David G. Bradley likes to say he has had three large pursuits in life. The first two were the Corporate Executive Board and the Advisory Board, Washington companies that ascended by advising other firms on how to compete in business. They made him more than $300 million. At 54, Bradley no longer has any association with the two companies. But he is using the things he learned from those endeavors and applying them to his third and latest undertaking, the Atlantic Media holding company, whose centerpiece is a respected if cerebral, 150-year-old, money-losing monthly, Atlantic magazine. His latest project: take a group of properties founded on a 19th-century brand and leverage them to a robust, online presence. ....

Handmade is best for Christmas gifts
Posted Thursday, December 28, 2006 1:26:13 PM by Blog57 Team
Once again, my family has been busy getting ready for Christmas! This time, we have mainly been busy making hand-made stuff. For example, my mom is working on a quilt and a scrapbook for my dad, a wreath (made out of an old movie reel) for my brother Aaron, and a booklet of my past columns for my grandma. I myself am going to make some stuff for people. My mom, for example, is getting a beaded lanyard for her Mayo ID card. Rainy (Aaron's girlfriend) will be getting two pairs of beaded earrings from me. My dad and Aaron will both receive wine glass charms (beaded, of course). If I manage to get my act together, my grandma will receive a beaded star. You have probably noticed that all of my gifts will have one thing in common: they will be beaded. Yes, I have discovered a great new hobby! But more about that in a future column! In addition to all these gifts, my family also does a lot of holiday baking....

Give guests holiday party gifts to remember

Time to send that little black party dress to the cleaner's, because the holiday party season is almost upon us. I love this hurly-burly time of year, with all its receptions, open houses and dinner parties, because I relish the chance to spend time with dear friends I just don't see often enough.I'm always so honored when people join us at our home for a gathering during the holidays - or any time of the year - that I can't resist spoiling them with a small gift. I'm a romantic at heart, so I hope that whenever they see this little token of our friendship, they will remember our evening together with fondness. When I select a take-home remembrance for a party, I expect this small gift to play two big roles. First, it has to look smashing on my table. Not only must it fit the theme of the event, but it has to be a perfect accent to each place setting....

COEUR d'ALENE -- They give away goodies galore and wine by the gallon, but the ArtWalk is still a profitable way for shops in the downtown area to make sales and introduce their products to the public."It's a good sales night," said Deborah Rathbun, partner at Angel Gallery of Fine Arts & Antiques on Sherman Avenue. "It promotes the gallery ... hopefully, people will come back the next day to buy gifts."She and employee were hustling Thursday afternoon to clean and arrange the shop to give it a fresh look for tonight's event. ....

Your wedding party includes some of the most important people on your special day. Your family and friends helped you plan your wedding, and they'll be there for you on your big day. To show your appreciation, here are some traditional gift ideas we found, plus a few we created on our own. For the best man, consider a personalized, regulation-size bat or an engraved baseball mounted on a wood stand. For a home-run surprise, tickets to a ballgame. Looking for one-stop shopping? Grab some gift cards such as Lady Foot Locker, iTunes Music Cards or Linens 'n' Things (all available at drug and grocery stores). Place them in a small decorative box. Within minutes we had guaranteed-to-please gift packages for bridesmaids. For two-stop shopping, add a TJ Maxx gift card (available only at TJ Maxx stores)....

The most outrageous stuff sold online
Posted Monday, November 06, 2006 3:31:17 AM by Blog57 Team
When Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban wanted a jet, he went online. For $41 million, Cuban got what he logged on for: a Gulfstream GV, delivered to his hangar. Back then, in 1999, consumers spent a wee $25 billion over the Internet. Since then, online retailing has exploded at a 35 percent annual clip, to $176 billion last year, according to a report from online retailing association Shop.org and Forrester Research. The most popular categories were travel (at $62 billion), followed by computer hardware and software ($14 billion), autos and auto parts ($13 billion), apparel ($11 billion) and home furnishings ($8 billion). The online market for jets may be a bit smaller - as is the demand for entire islands, lunar real estate and Soviet tanks from World War II. But that doesn't mean someone isn't trying to peddle this crazy stuff online....

Fifteen suppliers of wine and liquor, including Louisville's Brown-Forman Corp., have paid $2.3 million to settle an investigation into the use of rebates and gifts to obtain unfair preferential treatment from retailers and restaurants, New York state officials said yesterday in Albany. The illegal incentives can result in higher prices and limit choices for consumers, Attorney General Eliot Spitzer said in announcing the settlement. Liquor wholesalers reached a similar settlement two months ago. ....

N.Y. liquor, wine suppliers pay $2.3 million to end marketing probe

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Fifteen national manufacturers and suppliers of wine and liquor have paid $2.3 million to settle an investigation into the use of rebates and gifts to influence the marketing of their products by retailers and restaurants, New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer said Monday. Spitzer said the incentives can result in higher prices and limit choices for consumers. Under the agreement, some of the largest suppliers operating in New York agreed to ban the use of preferential discounts, rebates, allowances, cash and gifts to buy favor for their products, according to Spitzer. The incentives went to some of the biggest retailers. The settlement involves Bacardi USA Inc., Banfi Products Corp., Brown-Forman Corp., Constellation Brands Inc., Diageo North American Inc., E&J Gallo Winery, Future Brands LLC, Absolut Spirits Co....
