| | | Delhi govt to open wine cellars | | Posted Wednesday, December 27, 2006 3:14:51 PM by Blog57 Team | | A week after it allowed five star hotels to run bars round the clock, the government now says hard liquor is bad for heart. So Delhiites should uncork a bottle of wine instead this Christmas and New Year eve. The Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation or DSIIDC, which is a PSU, will open the wine cellars at Connaught Place, Masjid Moth and Sheikh Sarai. "We were ruled by the English, so we love whisky. If we had French as our rulers, we might have turned to wine. Wine is extremely healthy for the heart. We hope to encourage the wine drinking habit," said Jalaj Shrivastava, Managing Director, DSIIDC. The cellars will be well stocked. The one in Greater Kailash has over 300 brands, ranging from foreign brands to the ones made in India.... | |

| | | Home Wine Cellars, No Longer Just for Geeks, Soar in Popularity | | Posted Sunday, December 17, 2006 1:19:10 PM by Blog57 Team | | Dec. 14 (Bloomberg) -- What the espresso machine was to the 1990s, the home wine cellar is to the 21st century. At my local Home Depot earlier this month I spotted shoppers snapping up 16- to 50-bottle mini-cellars that sit on or under the kitchen counter. With prices ranging from $90 to $1,500, sales are booming at chains like Target, Best Buy, Lowe's and Costco. A couple of years ago, home cellars were specialty items only for wine geeks or rich collectors. A 2005 Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers study found that 4.3 million households in America now have wine cellars, with more than 3 million purchased since 2003. The most popular are small models typically made in China, reports Barbara Insel, managing director of Napa Valley's MKF Research, which has followed the trend.... | |

| | | Country Corner Cellars hosts holiday open house and wine-tasting | | Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 7:36:06 PM by Blog57 Team | | Country Corner Cellars will host its first Holiday Open House and Tasting on Nov. 10 from 3:30 - 7 p.m. and Nov. 11 from 2 - 4 p.m. A series of wines especially compatible with holiday celebrations will be featured at this courtesy event. The wine shop is part of the County Corner complex, located at Terrill Beach Road and Crescent Beach Drive. Country Corner owner Theron Soderlund said the wine shop is "a natural progression of what we already do with the rest of the site: we have the building, the infrastructure, the contacts. It's a lot easier for us to take this step then someone trying to break into the market." Soderlund has been buying wine since 1992 for Eastsound Station, his store in Eastsound village. The goal of Country Corner Cellars is to "supply the local population, and emphasize international selection, with a focus towards northwest wines" said Soderlund.... | |

| | | Looking for balance in zinfandel | | Posted Wednesday, November 08, 2006 1:28:41 PM by Blog57 Team | | IT SURELY ranks as one of the most surprising and coincidental reversals of fortune. We are witnessing zinfandel's struggles with its usefulness as a food wine just at the time when the overripe, overoaked style of chardonnay begins to be replaced by a wonderfully well-balanced version. I have discussed the "zinfandel is too hot, too overripe" topic in the past, so there is no need to repeat all the particulars. Still, a few little items stand out and need to be aired. Whether you agree with me or not, and I know from your letters and e-mails that many folks enjoy expanded-size zins, it is hard to miss the signposts that the trend is not moderating. One of my longtime favorite zin producers is Rosenblum Cellars in Alameda. I have made no bones about that in the past, and I continue to like their efforts when they are balanced, fruity, rich and easy to drink.... | |

| | | THE CHRONICLE S WINE SELECTIONS / Syrah: Washington s Smaller Appellations | | Posted Friday, November 03, 2006 3:58:15 PM by Blog57 Team | | The Washington Syrah puzzle grows more complex each year. At nearly 11 million acres, the Columbia Valley is the state's biggest appellation -- and the one you're most likely to find on the shelf. But more specific locales are gaining ground. The Yakima Valley has a diversity of hilly growing sites. Walla Walla's gravelly soils and moderate climate create layers of subtle flavor. And you'll soon see more wines from the Horse Heaven Hills and Wahluke Slope. RATING: TWO AND A HALF STARS .. 2003 Couer d' Alene Cellars Opulence Washington Syrah ($40) This wine is actually from Horse Heaven Hills, Washington's newest AVA, though it's simply labeled "Washington." Definite ripeness lends to slightly increased alcoholic heat. Soft cherry, blackberry-Sprite spritzer and earth aromas lead to a lively palate of bright red cherry with spicy finish.... | |
